Zachary’s Pizza and Tempranillo…Oh, Yeah
Oh, man. I know I’m about to get all worked up as I relive this meal. I had been wanting to try Zachary’s pizza ever since my first week at Rosenblum when two co-workers shared a deep dish, making my mouth water in intense envy as I ate my boring sandwich. That and my friend LaMont from Chicago says it’s the closest he’s found to what he gets back home. Then to top it off, last week a wine club member who helps run the San Ramon store was talking about it, getting me salivating all over again. So I sent BK over to Oakland (er, turns out it was more like Berkeley) to pick us up a pie while I made salad and opened wine. I decided on the 2004 Venta Mazzaron Tempranillo, and it turned out to be a great choice. I found raspberry, cherry, plum, pepper, baking spices, and leather that went very well with the pizza. I also tried my favorite Rosenblum Zin but it was too chocolate driven to match the spinach and mushrooms.
How was the pizza, you ask after all that build-up? Oh, yeah, it was good. The best I’ve had in a very long time. (Maybe even ever, other than Louisiana Pizza Kitchen off the French Quarter after a long afternoon of walking around New Orleans.) I’ll definitely be back!

God, I miss that pizza. We lived on that pizza when we lived in Kensington. And that wine, which I’ve had, would be a great pairing for it. Looks delish!

Yeah, that pizza was a lot of trouble to get that night, but it was worth it. Especially with that wine.

Dr. Debs, I can see why.
BK, We’re definitely having it again, but I’ll go get it next time.
