Behind the Vines

Wine Blogging Wednesday Woes

by Farley on November 6th, 2007

Readers and drinkers, this is a reminder and note to myself but also a question to you…

Wine Blogging WednesdayNext week brings Wine Blogging Wednesday #39 over at Brooklyn Guy’s Wine and Food Blog. The theme is a good one: the less expensive coast of Burgundy, i.e. Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais. More affordable is always better in my book. And we had some nice Chardonnay from that area at my study group last week.

However, here’s the thing. While Alameda has far more choices for dining than Redwood City did, I’ve been missing my K & L and Beltramos as places to pick up wines for my tasting group and Wine Blogging Wednesday. So far, I’ve tried Farmstead Wine and Cheese, but it’s just not in my nature to spend at least $5 more per bottle, despite the good selection. BevMo in Jack London Square is ok, as is Trader Joe’s in the South Shore center. But I haven’t really gotten around to exploring Oakland and the other nearby places.

Who has suggestions for where to buy wine in the East Bay?

Well, I don’t know what you mean by East Bay. But when I lived in Kensington I went to North Berkeley Imports in the Gourmet Ghetto. Can’t imagine what would be better, unless it’s Kermit Lynch next to Cafe Fanny. Of course if you mean north East Bay then I can’t help you–you’ve exhausted my knowledge!!

    Dr. Debs,

Thanks for the suggestions. I had forgotten that Kermit Lynch wasn’t too far and I haven’t heard of the other. I’ve been meaning to explore Berkeley more anyway. What with a really great meal last week and the idea of a Gourmet Ghetto….

Oh, good. They’re in an ok place for you. North Berkeley imports brings in wines from growers, so you may not see them elsewhere. But they have a lot of Burgundy. They have a great website, too. And Cafe Fanny is not a bad option for food either, if you are going to Kermit!

I love Kermit Lynch and North Berkeley Imports - also a little shout out to Solano Cellars in Albany, Vintage (their sister store) in Berkeley and the new Wine Mine in Oakland. All have some really nice choices and quite a bit of French wines.
    Cheers!

Oh, have you gone to Vintage Berkeley? Yeah, love Beltramo’s and K&L on the Peninsula — I work down there, so I hit those up, as well as Farmstead, Du Vin, BevMo and Cost Plus closer to home… One can never have enough, after all!
