Will I Ever Have Crab and Chardonnay Again???

BK was counting down the opening of Dungeness crab season for weeks. The first day, he and the cellar rat went out on the pier in Pacifica and later to Half Moon Bay with their traps and their lines. By the end of the day, they had six or seven rock crabs each, as the Dungeness didn’t seem to be out that day. BK steamed them while I made a spinach salad and roasted corn on the cob. I opened a bottle of 2004 Thomas Fogarty Chardonnay, slightly buttery to match the dish of melted butter in which to dip the sweet meat. It was quite the tasty meal, one of my favorite food and wine pairings. Unfortunately, with the Bay Bridge incident, I’m not sure when we can have it again, as crab season could be suspended indefinitely…

Mmmmm, that was good. The situation with local crab changes daily, but it’s looking like the regions nearby and outside the bay will stay open to sport crabbing. Unfortunately, success with Dungeness has been rare this season in less than 200 feet of water, so the sooner Farley gets me my yacht, the more I ought to be able to catch!

I’ll get right on that. You have to stock up on the Chard, in that case…

The mention of Half Moon Bay brought back so many memories. Are the party boats that fish for rod cod still there? Now that fishery is dead, I am glad to hear the crabbing for Dungeness is still allowed.
These crab sells for $6 per lb in NY and I am so jealous that you can catch them for free (minus a yacht potentially).

Andrew, while the yacht is on hold, BK is going to try again tomorrow. So I’m not sure what’s for dinner yet, but you can guess what I’m hoping for.
