Warming a House, Hurting My Head
The new place got a good christening last night, and you can probably imagine that there was a lot of wine. I got up early and started cooking–everything from three kinds of quiche to stuffed mushrooms, goat cheese layered with basil and sun-dried-tomato pesto, and miniature apple pies. But that’s my thing, that’s what makes me happy. Sure, I could have been doing other work, writing and such. But I enjoy making good food and sharing it with people (and yes, getting the compliments). The invite said not to worry about food but to feel free to bring wine. And, oh, wine was brought.
I’m still feeling not quite myself, as a result. My glass was never allowed to empty, and I had all kinds of bubbly: J, Roederer, Domaine Carneros, a few from France, including one especially interesting magnum with a brass plate for a label. I’ve talked to a few people today who said it was quite a party, and I have to take their word for it. Seriously, though, I shouldn’t have had quite so much, but everything was so good. And the clean-up wasn’t too bad. I borrowed glasses from work, so I can take them back and use the industrial dish washer in the tasting room. Of course, there’s quite a pile for the recycling bin….
