Behind the Vines

Twice Memed, Once Replied

by Farley on February 11th, 2008

Both Cyndi over at Jewelry and Beading and Kelly at Taxgirl have called upon me to share some things with my readers that they might not know…  So here’s my belated response, modeled after Kelly’s because I like how hers were all connected:

1. I love watching reruns of Murder, She Wrote while working on my blogs.  It reminds me of scorching Mississippi summer nights, back when I was a kid and we didn’t have central air.  Sunday evenings would find me in my parents’ room watching the show with my mom, the air conditioner at full capacity, so cold that I’d need to wrap a sheet around me as I sat in a rocking chair following along as J.B. Fletcher solved one mystery after another.

wine and books2. Speaking of mysteries, I adore reading a good one.  From the old copies of ABC Murders and Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie that I’d read a million times to Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Sherlock Holmes, and then later Patricia Cornwell and Sue Grafton—it’s my favorite genre to read when I want to get away from the real world.

3. Books were always my obsession, what I spent any extra money on as a kid. I’d beg mom to take me to Waldenbook’s in the Metro Center, Jackson’s main mall at the time.  We lived out in the country without any neighboring kids and along with the combo of humidity and mosquitoes outside, I spent most of my time indoors, nose in a book.

4. As I got older, and especially when I moved to Montana, I realized I love being outdoors. Camping, hiking, picnics, floating down the river…

5. When I moved to California two years ago, it wasn’t long before the rains came. And came and came.  I told everyone back home that it had been at least 40 days and 40 nights of nonstop rain. It drove me crazy because I had been having so much fun exploring state parks and other hiking trails, which I would sometimes combine with winetasting excursions, such as after my first time to Bonny Doon or on the Pichetti Zinfandel Trail.

6. Then when the rains stopped, I realized they weren’t kidding about sunny California.  The months and months of dryness drove me crazier than all the floods had.  Those seemingly unending spells have me longing for the smell of fresh rain on the pavement and the sound of drops pattering against the windows.  I still wish it weren’t ‘all or nothing’ out here, that we could spread it out over the entire year.  (Oh, yeah, and I miss thunderstorms.)

7. And now that I’m out there enjoying all this outdoors and wine country, I never read much anymore, other than when camping, on planes, and in waiting rooms.  But with the Wine Book Club deadline looming, I need to fix that pronto.

I send the challenge out to other bloggers— if they choose to accept it—to tell us more about themselves.

Well, better twice memed than once maimed! In some ways, I find my experience the last few years parallels yours, Farley, in that with so much exciting outdoor wine country fun to do out there, I’m reading for fun a lot less than I used to. Not that reading about wine and outdoor pursuits isn’t also fun!

    Russ,
    True to that first statement….

As for the others, I often feel guilty about that, but there’s only so much time in the day. I can barely keep us with reading other blogs.

I’ve been memed! May take me a while to get to this but I’ll certainly give it a shot. Do I respond here, or on d547?

Jill, no rush. It took me a while, myself.
And respond over at the domaine…when there’s time.
