Riesling From New York to Go With My Pork
This was the wine I had specifically planned to bring to a past tasting group for our Riesling night but got it in the mail one day too late due to a shipping mistake. It took me a few months to get around to opening it. I picked the 2005 Salmon Run Riesling, in part due to the recommendation of Lenn Thompson of Lenndevours. He mentioned Dr. Konstantin Frank as a suggestion, and Salmon Run is the second (more affordable) label. Or it seems to be, at least. I tried to send a request for more info several times, but the website wasn’t cooperating.
This was my first New York wine, and I was excited to finally try a Riesling from Finger Lakes. The area continues to gain attention, especially for this particular variety, and Dr. Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars can take some of the credit for that. Established in 1962, this winery brings in many gold medals from competitions local and worldwide.
With the wine, I decided to serve pork tenderloin, just as I did with the Riesling tasting. This time, however, I prepared the pork according to this recipe from Paula Deen’s healthy eating episode. It had an Asian influence with the soy sauce and tamarind, with an extra kick from the Dijon and garlic. Very tasty and a relatively good match with the wine: the acidity of the wine was complimented by that in the orange juice. Though the wine had a fair amount of unexpected sweetness at the front, the finish was quite crisp. In between, I found peaches, lemon, lime, chalk, and lightly floral notes.
First time? A success. Luckily, I also ordered a Cabernet Franc, and it’s still waiting on me.

Millbrook (the “other” William Selyem label) also does some interesting NY whites. I had the Tocai Fruilano a few weeks ago at NY Vintage and it was pretty good. As for Cab Francs, Gary from Wine Library talked about the Wolffer a couple of weeks back and I am looking forward to checking it out.
