Revisiting Paso Robles

by Farley on October 26th, 2007

A few weeks ago I made a meal that inadvertantly became a revisitation of the trip BK and I took to Paso Robles in June. First, the caesar salad with diced anchovies asked to be served with the 2005 Garretson Celeidh Rose’. Far from a typical pink, this one is quite dark with big bold flavors, especially pomegranate and an almost meaty quality. The way the process is described on the website is almost enough to make one desire to make a good, hearty rose’. Maybe it was my imagination, but the wine also seemed to have that somewhat salty quality that comes from the soil in Paso, making it a perfect pairing for the salad.

Sherry berry pork tenderloin with Peachy Canyon ZinfandelThe main course was quite fun to make and more fun to say: Pork chops with sherry-berry gravy. I decided a nice fruity Zinfandel would be perfect with the meal and, in looking through my stock, settled on the 2005 Peachy Canyon Westside Zinfandel. It had loads of strawberry and raspberry, with hints of cinnamon. So delicious with the tender pork chops, which I had adjusted the recipe to add fresh raspberries and blackberries with a bit of boysenberry preserves. Sweet potatoes on the side, and you’ll be drooling, I promise.

key lime pieThe final component to the meal was BK’s special request. He’d been hinting for quite some time that I should make a key lime pie, so I figured I’d give it a whirl. Turned out quite well, and at that point I knew I had to pick a Paso wine to finish up the trio. Deciding against the Eberle Muscat Canelli, I opted instead for the Tobin James “Dream Weaver.” Not a sparkling wine I’d sit around and drink on its own, due to the sweetness, it was the perfect match for the pie with its pear and lime flavors. I think. Although we were not finishing the bottles by any means, I have to admit I was not taking good notes at that point. The meal was too enjoyable and I’ve let too much time pass.

But hey, the enjoyment is what it’s all about, in my book. So take my advice. If you’ve got a stock of wines from a tasting trip, try planning a meal around two or three of them, and relive the good times.
