Passing the Two-Year Mark of Living My Wine-Colored Dream

by Farley on January 24th, 2008

anniversary on a ducky calendarIt occurred to me that I had missed the two-year anniversary of my long drive to Redwood City, California, that ended January 19 and began my wine dream. This month last year, I was very aware of its arrival and excited to chart my progress. This year had too much going on for me to notice, which is a good thing, except when things are due around the same time. Because as I mentioned in my post from a little over a year ago, there were times I wasn’t sure that I’d make it (i.e.  could barely pay my bills). I can remember driving along 101, thinking to myself, I live in California…. a place I never would have imagined moving to, if it weren’t for wine. But I’m still here with no plans to leave anytime soon.

I made some goals for myself at the one-year mark and thought I’d go back and see how I’ve done.

1) Join a wine club.
Check. Domaine Carneros, thanks to working with Kenny G, and Wine Q, cause how could I not?
2) Visit more parts of wine country.
Partial check. While I did make it to Calaveras County to visit El Jefe, my plans to hit Mendocino and Anderson Valley had to be postponed due to too few chunks of free time. February is the new goal, and this time I’m not going to budge.
3) Get some sort of wine preservation to not waste wine.
Yes. My friend Kelly sent me a Vacu Vin for my birthday, rather belatedly, but nonetheless. And while I gave up on my vinegar making in jars, I do plan to buy a small barrel from a place in Berkeley.
4)Try Two Buck Chuck
What can I say? I still haven’t had it. It was in my apartment for three months before giving it away.Maybe at this point, I should buy one and save it for an Open That Bottle Night somewhere down the road. Just for kicks.

Other than that, I now have this wine blog in addition to my first one, and I just started a cooking blog. Plus, you’ve probably picked up on the fact that I love my job at Rosenblum Cellars sometimes because of the added responsibility and stress and sometimes despite it.

very jealous of your foray into the wine industry. I hope to some day gather the cahones to leave my corporate job and do something I love, like dealing with some aspect of wine.

    Cheers

Well, John, I try not to only talk about the good parts. Like it’s not the kind of job you take for the money. But the other benefits really do make it worth it, and if I had a job where I made more, I doubt I’d be as happy.

If you ever decide to take the plunge, I’ll do what I can to help.
