Must Love Wine
One good thing about writing a blog is being able to go back and read about not only what wine was drunk and how it tasted but who was there and how I felt. Recently I came across a post from almost one year ago where I can be glad things have changed…
Here’s a snippet:
Once you’ve been single a while, you start to re-evaluate that list of qualities needed in a mate. The list could be in your head, written in a journal, on a cocktail napkin…. Wherever it resides, it has probably gone through many alterations—changing as you change and as you learn from past mistakes.
There are two areas, though, on which I will stand firm:
1) I decided that I want to be with someone passionate about art, whether it be music, writing, painting, theater, or some other creative medium. This is key to understanding my own obsessions
2) Speaking of… I also decided I need someone who cares about wine or at least is willing to learn. Rather important and more so every day.
Now, I don’t expect to find a relationship like Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher have. They met in Miami as reporters to find instant attraction to each other and wine, so that they now co-author the highly-regarded “Tastings” in the Wall Street Journal as well as books, such as Love By the Glass. Over 25 years of love and wine. While that would be too much to ask for, I do hope to find a person who can put up with my need to plan a meal around the wine, who will be patient as I beg to go winetasting yet again, who will not be embarrassed by four different glasses of wine in front of my plate at the Christmas party.
And so….it happened. If you’ve read this blog and if you followed Wine Outlook, you’ll have noticed a lot of dinners, winery visits, and bottles shared with ‘BK’. Since today marks our six-month anniversary, I think it’s only appropriate to comment on it here– as we met through a mutual winemaking friend (the cellar rat) at a winetasting group, no less.
It was a good sign that even before we had gone on a date, he brought me The Oxford Companion to Wine while I was pouring at Thomas Fogarty, the week before my birthday. He would cook yummy things for our winetastings, and culinary skills are always appreciated. We usually take turns making dinner and picking the wine, but he can admit that I’m the better cook. Or I’m sure he will after reading this.
Thankfully, I found someone who can put up with my crazy wine urges, excessive note taking, and the fact that I have to take several pictures of most of our meals. Patience is a virtue, and thankfully BK has plenty. The bonus is that he makes wine with our friend on the Bonfire Vineyards label, which means extra insight into the process and hopefully, soon, extra wine.
