Fighting Homesickness With Food and Wine

Here’s another post that almost got lost in the blog shuffle, and the reason for not skipping on this one is twofold. First, with the holidays looming, I’ve been missing Mississippi lately–my family, friends, the food. Creola in San Carlos is a great place to go to appease those pangs. New Orleans decor and food, and I can remember walking through the French Quarter, minus the extra-big hurricane in hand. Plus, Creola has a great deal on Monday evenings: a four-course dinner for $25. When the food is such a good deal, you’ve got more to spend on wine…. I knew I had to start with the crawfish hushpuppies because they are something I cannot replicate at home without a deep fryer. But that doesn’t mean I don’t crave them. BK and I ordered a split of rose’: Domaine de Brigue Cotes de Provence. Made from Grenache, Cinsault, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it was refreshing and light– with strawberry and citrus flavors–and went well with the appetizer.

For the main course, I had to order the Mississippi catfish, pan sauteed and topped with a light remoulade. We drank the 2005 Nora Albarino alongside the meal, and it was a perfect pairing for my food and for BK’s alligator piccata. The wine showed peach, apple, minerality, white pepper, and hints of cream. With its medium acidity, it cut through the creaminess of the sauces. All quite good.
We had to get our dessert to go, after such a tasty meal. But that bread pudding sure did taste good the next night. Now that I think about it, it may be time to get back over to my old stomping grounds and have another homesickness antidote.

Hey, great to see the Nora. We handed out bottles of Nora to family when our daughter Nora was born. It has always had a special place in our hearts.

Um, yes please. I’ll have two servings of crawfish hushpuppies and catfish.

Brian, That’s a sweet story and good idea. Are you going to buy wine made the year she was born for later on in life?
Paige,
Heck, yeah. I’m ready for seconds!
