Behind the Vines

Hungary Is Not Just For Tokaji

by Farley on October 23rd, 2007

dinner to go with an out-there white wineI have to show you, readers and drinkers, a picture of the food because I forgot to take a picture of the bottle. Too bad, as this wine is a very interesting one: 2005 Woodsman’s White made from the Cserszegi Füszeres grape, which is a cross between Gewurztraminer and Irsai Oliver, itself a cross. It’s grown in Aszár-Neszmély– which, according to Tom Stevenson’s Encyclopedia, is a region to watch in Hungary for its high-quality/low-price whites. And this one was no exception. For only $3 at Trader Joe’s, it was a no brainer to buy. Bad wine? So what… you only lost three bucks. Good wine? Fantastic, buy more.

The result:buy more.  It was very tropical and floral on the nose: lychee, pineapple, apple, and gardenia.  Tasting it showed more dryness than might have been expected, along with lemon, more floral (gardenia and orange blossoms), and just the slightest touch of ginger.  I served it with creamy corn and roasted pepper soup from Trader Joe’s, to keep with the theme, along with a casear salad. The soup and the wine might both be a little confused aboout what they’re trying to be (sweet vs. savory, throw in some spicy).  But for less than $6, you can have both and try to figure it out for yourself.

And you don’t just have to take my word for it. The Rosenblum staff all enjoyed it the next day, and here are a couple other blog reviews:by Dr. Debs and in Purple Liquid.
