Behind the Vines

Divine German Wines With Dee Vines

by Farley on June 17th, 2008

Playing catch-up from a few weeks ago….

Dee Vines WinesNari came through for our tasting group (different one than yesterday’s post), big time.  We were all a little disheartened (especially me) after two bad Alsatian tastings and really needed some wines to knock our socks off. Natacha from Dee Vines Wines did just that with an array of Rieslings.  We tasted a whopping 10 wines altogether, though I’d say after #7, I was a little saturated, even if I did keep taking notes.

Some of the high points~

2006 Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Kabinett feinher from Ruwer: lovely acidity, peach, minerality, wet stone, apple, lemon….fermented in oak–older, larger casks…barrels are bottled separately and some folks go crazy seraching for specific numbers

2006 Keller Riesling QbA “von der Fels” from Rheinhessen: less fruity, more spice (ginger), loamy, slightly creamy, unripe apple

2006 Müller-Catoir Haardter Bürgergarten Spätlese trocken from Pfalz: very spritzy with tiny bubbles, peachy, tart, floral

2006 Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Fruhlingsplätzchen Kabinett from Nahe: sweeter but good acidity still, slight petrol, lemon blossom, dry finish

2006 Weingut von Hövel Scharzhofberger Spätlese from Saar: toasted pine nuts, pine sap, soap (glycerine), and candy apple

Some things I learned—
1. 2007 is supposed to be an amazing vintage, akin to 1971.
2. Keller is one to watch, an up-and-coming star.
3. Feinherb indicates the wine style between trocken (dry) and halbtrocken (off-dry), though there is no legal definition. Some producers prefer feinherb to halbtrocken due to quality associations.

Cheers to good tastings!

farley, do you have prices for these, and where did they come from. Would I find them easily at Bevmo, or should I go to K&L in Redwood City?

    Hi,

I visited last week Emrich-Schönleber, Keller, Wittmann and Breuer. 07 is an outstanding vintage, no doubt. Keep your eyes open for 07 “von der Fels”, as it taste like a Grand Cru Riesling/”Großes Gewächs”.

You will find many photos and TNs on my blog about this trip.

    Cheers,
    Martin

    Sara,

I have prices somewhere, but I think most were mid 20’s. And I’m not sure if they’re available elsewhere, as these came from Dee Vines.

    Martin,
How wonderful to visit these producers first hand. I must confess I’m very jealous. I look forward to checking out your blog.
