Checking Out Bacar’s Wine Bar
After I went to see Mamma Mia!, my friend Lorraine and I headed over to Brannan Street to a restaurant she’d been wanting me to check out for its wine list. We arrived at Bacar, and as it was after 10, we headed to the bar area for some wine and the late night menu. For the food, we had a tasty Napoli pizza with tomato sauce, capers, and a slightly salty cheese (Bellweather Crescenza), which our server considerately placed on a small table next to us. The reason he needed to do so? I had ordered a wine flight. Though there were many choices, depending on your mood and sense of adventure, I picked this one for the variety. For $21.50, I got two ounces of each of the following:
MV Sorelle Bronca Prosecco–vaguely sweet and stony
2005 Chateau la Baronne Rose’–licorice, almost medicinal
2006 Lee Family Farm Silvaspoons Verdehlo–crisp and grassy
2004 Chateau Villaneuve Samur-Champigny–earthy, dense
2005 Mirabile Nero d’Avola–yum! smooth, best with the pizza
The two French wines were the ones I didn’t finish, but I enjoyed the others very much. It’s definitely a place I’ll return to, since the wine list was quite extensive. About 50 wines were available in 2 oz, 250 ml, or 500 ml. Some of the other flight options include sparkling, exotic whites, and several others, including the staff favorites I chose. And then there was the rest of the menu, which I didn’t have the time or energy to examine.
