Bubbly Blast From the Past

by Farley on June 13th, 2008

Duval Leroy Rose ChampagneWhen I worked at Rosenblum’s Healdsburg location a couple of weeks ago, I went to The Bottle Barn annex store ( a much smaller version of the one in Santa Rosa I still want to visit) and stumbled upon a bottle I had to have: Duval Leroy Champagne Rose de Saignée.  The first (and only) time I had a Duval Leroy was a few years ago at a restaurant with a dear friend I haven’t spoken to in far too long. We mispronounced it, but that didn’t mean we didn’t appreciate it.  I remembered it being one of the best Champagnes I’ve had, and this was the first bottle I’d seen in a store. I think it was $37.99, but I didn’t care. When I opened it last week (and even made some fried chicken to go with it, instead of our normally healthier fare), it was because BK and I have been working extra hard these days and deserved a treat.   We just needed a little extravagance to make up for it.

I didn’t take notes, but I remember it being ultra smooth with a lovely display of tiny bubbles.  It was a little floral—roses, if I recall—and quite fruity: strawberry and cherry and a touch of sweetness.

And fittingly, when I opened it, it was around the time I received a package in the mail from that same dear friend mentioned earlier.  She sent me The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters, who I’ve been reading about in Ruth Reichl’s book.  Just goes to show how everything is connected.
