Belated Holiday Dinner With Wine
Just because I haven’t written about a meal doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. It’s a matter of timing and organization. Therefore, I’m just now getting around to recapping my Christmas day meal with wine pairings. Food items: turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, butternut squash, candied sweet potatoes, divinely sweet pearl onions, ambrosia, and more that escapes me now (due to the meals in between here and there). The wine: 2006 Bonfire Vineyards Blue Moon Sauvignon Blanc, 2006 Garsa Rosado de Sangiovese, and 2005 Rosenblum Planchon Vineyard Zinfandel. I had a glass of each of the second and third with dinner, and here’s what I found…
I only briefly tasted the Sauv Blanc to note that I liked it much better than when it first came out due to the more tart, less round aspect. We had mainly brought a few bottles of that wine because BK’s mom did the artwork on the label, and she had yet to get any.
As for the rosado, I remember thinking as I had the first time I tasted it that there had to be some oak on that one due to all the vanilla I got on the palate, along with raspberry and strawberry. It went quite nicely with the turkey.
The Planchon Zin, which I adore, had its usual smoky big black fruit. I was surprised at how well it went with the onions, with their decadently sweet preparation, but not at how it paired with my side dish of roasted butternut squash with thyme, toasted pecans, and blue cheese. Right on the money.
Overall, a great meal with some amazing pairings.

That was a fun selection of wines. I enjoyed drinking those together. And we had a surprise hit with the favorite dish that even got my uncle to eat his least favorite veggie - broccoli rice casserole!

BK, that broccoli rice was at Thanksgiving. Remember they were all disappointed I didn’t make it again?

Like I said! Too bad we didn’t have it again!
