Behind the Vines

Back to Teaching. Wine, This Time

by Farley on December 8th, 2007

I don’t think I’ve ever talked about the teaching part of my past before. It was something I was interested in as a kid and later in high school when I taught Sunday School at Holy Savior Catholic Church and with my Girl Scout troop who was always teaching younger girls songs and crafts. But my mom is a teacher, and because she loves me and wanted me to have more than she did, she steered me away from an English degree in college. Later, I would gravitate back to the field, as a writing tutor and an instructor in graduate school. Then I taught English classes at a technical college once I had my second degree.

wine classThen it was all wine, all the time. However, there’s definitely an educational aspect to working in a tasting room. People ask questions about vineyards, vintages, varieties, techniques, and more. Questions specific to Rosenblum and about wine in general. I find those conversations to be my favorite part about the job, the times where I get all warm and fuzzy and know I made the right decision. Therefore, I am super excited to say that I’ll be teaching educational seminars at the winery starting in January, along with Sean. We came up with a list of topics and a schedule, and the classes are limited, so call or visit us soon to get a spot. I had a lady call yesterday who wanted to buy admission to two of the classes for her husband’s Christmas present. She was asking about my idea “Be Your Own Critic” and it thrilled me to explain the concept to her. So, if anyone else has questions about the classes or at all, please let me know. I’ll be happy to pass on what I know…

sounds great Farley - I agree that conversations are the best part of working in a tasting room, and I am sure most of the visitors to your tasting room would agree that a knowledgeable attendant makes the experience all that much better.

And is that the Oxford Companion to wine I see??

    :)

    I think so, too, John.

And yes, that’s the book I use the most. I hinted on my blog for my birthday, and BK got it for me before we were even dating!
